A modern tale of fortune-telling in the world of West Texas oil rigs
Check out writer/director Taylor Sheridan’s most popular movies and TV series on IMDb, ranked by user rating. A landowner, at least one who works in the oil industry, will serve as a middleman between exploration companies and landowners. Typically, a landowner’s job is to negotiate and finalize contracts with landowners who have mineral rights to lease those rights to the company they represent.

Essentially, they manage the land and secure the leases, so that they can drill for oil and gas. Like a foreman on a construction site, they build roads, build housing for workers (man camps), assemble the excavation machinery, and drill the well itself, especially in remote locations. They are also part fixer, part problem solver, and part facilitator.

Landman is my first Taylor Sheridan series, so I don’t have the expectations that being a Yellowstone fan seems to bring. The main plot so far is engaging and exciting without being too far-fetched. There are a few subplots that continue throughout the episodes, but perhaps one of them compromises the overall quality of the series.
The actors detail their characters well
The visual production is remarkable; the staging and environmental creation are to be appreciated. It would be interesting to hear from people who work in the industry on the realism of the field scenes. Billy Bob Thornton is exemplary and really directs the series well.
