The city of New Rome faces a duel between Caesar Catiline, a brilliant artist who advocates a utopian future, and the greedy mayor Franklin Cicero. Among them is Julia Cicero, whose loyalties are divided between her father and her lover. Francis Ford Coppola wrote the screenplay in the early 1980s, but the film was shelved in part due to his financial debts. Pre-production finally began in 2001 after 30 hours of second-unit footage were filmed and a table read with Paul Newman, Uma Thurman, Robert De Niro, James Gandolfini, Nicolas Cage, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Edie Falco, and Kevin Spacey, but the project was scrapped after the September 11 attacks because a scene from the script (p. 166); "intended" for the attacks. Coppola abandoned the project entirely in 2007 and only resumed development in 2019. At 21:40, Catiline’s character says the phrase «Holy Jesus Christ!» in astonishment. However, in-universe, the city of New Rome derives from a culture based on Roman mythology (example: 54:47, a dedication to Vesta; 01:55:51, someone says «The will of Kronos» or 01:51; 56:49, a statue of Saturn is visible, while there are many more images of Roman deities). Christianity does not exist in this universe. There is no reason for Catiline to use the phrase «Holy Jesus Christ!» and in such a context.. Caesar Catiline: *You* want to help me? Julia Cicero: Yes. And, well, I… well, I want to learn. Caesar Catiline: And you think one year of… medical school gives you the right to plow through the riches of my Emersonian mind? Full disclosure: this movie is a disaster of epic proportions—an absolute train wreck that derails, crashes, and then somehow catches fire. It’s so bad, it’s almost brilliant, the kind of terrible-it’s-brilliant nightmare that future cult fans will be dreaming about. And you know what? I respect Coppola for that. The guy is a cinematic legend who just decided to throw caution (and coherence) to the wind and drive a scientist crazy on this one. It’s a gorgeous, unfiltered mess from the mind of a genius who clearly stopped caring what anyone thought. Bravo, you great lunatic! ????????.
