Divine G, imprisoned in Sing Sing for a crime he didn’t commit, finds purpose in performing in a theater group with other incarcerated men in this story of resilience, humanity, and the transformative power of art. At the beginning of the film, the cast is rehearsing for various parts in the play. The group is criticized for not doing comedies, but their previous play was A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which is a comedy.

In Late Night with Seth Meyers: Anna Faris/Colman Domingo/Jose Medeles (2024). When everything in your life is taken away, it must be nearly impossible to find anything that provides a reason to keep going. Such is the case for prisoners, individuals who face an uncertain future of indeterminate length.
And, in difficult conditions like these, realistically speaking, one can’t help but wonder whether rehabilitation will actually prove to be a viable option
But for some, there’s hope from a seemingly unlikely source: the arts, as told in this fact-based drama about participants in the inmate theater program at New York City’s maximum-security Sing Sing prison. Featuring a cast that includes both professional actors and current and former members of this talented inmate troupe, viewers witness the ups and downs of these men as they struggle to make sense (and hope) of their time behind bars. Director Greg Kwedar’s second feature film offers an up-close look at the lives of these aspiring actors, both in terms of their onstage activities and their daily lives in conditions most of us probably can’t even imagine.
In doing so, this offering also takes the audience on a rollercoaster of emotions, from uplifting joys to heartfelt disappointments, revealing the tremendous strength of character that drives these individuals
While the film’s narrative is a bit thin and meandering at times, this is more than made up for by the film’s superb performances, led by Colman Domingo, Clarence Maclin, Paul Raci, and Sean San Jose, who, like virtually everyone else in this fine ensemble, bring an unparalleled depth to their characters and interpersonal relationships, easily some of the best work in these areas I’ve seen in quite some time. This is especially touching knowing that many of those taking part in this production can relate to their circumstances firsthand, thus infusing this outing with a level of sheer authenticity rarely seen on the big screen. For its efforts, «Sing Sing» has a good chance of being a contender in the 2024 awards season, especially in the acting categories, showing us what’s possible when we allow our passions to shine for their own sake, especially when we have nothing to lost in the process, a true source of inspiration from which we least expect it.
